Round 5 - AMA Motocross Championship Series
Buchanan, MI
Red Bud Track ‘n’ Trail
July 2-3, 2005
Team Makita Suzuki Racing’s Ricky Carmichael thrilled Michigan’s capacity crowd at Red Bud on Sunday when he won his 20th consecutive AMA Motocross race.  This impressive victory marks his fifth (out of five) AMA Motocross win this season, and it’s also his 120th combined AMA Supercross/Motocross career victory.

In the first 30-minute moto, Carmichael charged hard on his Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 and took the lead in just a few laps.  He created a gap and pulled away from the field, finishing in front of second place by more than 18 seconds.  In the second moto, Carmichael got the holeshot and led the entire moto to win by 17 seconds.

Ricky Carmichael:
”This is probably one of my favorite tracks on the circuit,” said Carmichael after the first moto.  “Everybody does a great job here.  The fans are great and the weather has been wonderful.  Hopefully the fans will see a good ride in the second moto.”

“It feels awesome to be here,” said Carmichael after the second moto.  “My Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 is good, the fans are great and I just love coming to Red Bud.  It was an awesome moto for me, I got the holeshot and I was watching the other guys racing.  It was like being a spectator and a racer at the same time.  Again, the fans are awesome and I just love racing here.”

In the 125 class, Team Makita Suzuki Racing’s Davi Millsaps and Broc Hepler had a rough ride at Red Bud, but both maintained their status of being in the top 10 overall in the championship points chase.  Millsaps had a poor start in the first moto but managed to snag a top-10 finish.  In the second moto, he got caught in a turn-one pile-up and could never really catch up.  Meanwhile, Hepler got caught in a first-moto pileup and then had bike problems in the second moto.

 Broc Hepler:
“In both motos, I got bad starts.  Then in the first moto, my Makita Suzuki RM-Z250 was going great but I got stuck in a pile-up.  In the second moto, I stalled the bike in the same place where I was in the pile-up.  But that’s over and I’m excited about Unadilla - it’s a great track, it’s all-natural terrain and it hasn’t changed since they’ve been running the race there.”

Davi Millsaps:
“As the day wore on, the track just got rougher and rougher and I got really tired during the first moto.  In the second moto, my Makita Suzuki RM-Z250 got me a decent start and the bike was going good and I was hoping for a podium finish.  But then I got caught in that big pile-up.  I got the bike started but I lost too many positions early on in the race and just couldn’t recover.  But I’m looking forward to having a week off to test and then to Unadilla after that.”
