Race Recap: Stewart Keeps Perfect Season Alive at Budds Creek

This weekend, the AMA Toyota Motocross season at Budds Creek saw another 1-1 sweep from AMA Motocross Lites class rider Ryan Villopoto and AMA Motocross class rider James Stewart. The two men have been unbeatable this year as Villopoto has now won 13 motos in-a-row and Stewart has swept the entire season. It is becoming a certainty to see the two riders atop the podium each week. The competition has not put up much of a battle and the only factor that can get in the way of the two winning out the rest of the season is an incident with themselves.

AMA Motocross Lites Class

Villopoto finished 1-1 and leads the standings by 103 points

In moto one, Ryan Dungey earned the holeshot.

Trey Canard quickly made the pass on Dungey for the lead with Villopoto back in third. Suzuki Rider Nico Izzi exploded off the gate passing Villopoto, Dungey, and Canard for the lead before the end of lap one. By lap two, Villopoto started to show why he is dominating the points standings as he passed Canard and Dungey. By lap three, he made the move to take the lead over Izzi. Izzi could not keep up the pace he had at the beginning of the moto as he eventually dropped to eighth place. Villopoto rode to the win, with Canard in second, and Dungey in third.

Dungey rode solid finishing second overall at Budds Creek

Canard jumped out and earned the holeshot in moto two.

Villopoto began the moto back in fourth. He moved quickly to the front of the pack and passed Canard to take the lead on lap three. The battle of the moto was between Martin Davalos, Ryan Sipes, and Bret MetCalfe. Davalos, coming off a third place finish last weekend, showed the two riders up moving ahead to finish third. Dungey and Canard looked to be going at it again for second position, when Canard got tangled with a rider and could not get the bike started. This allowed Dungey to finish second. Villopoto pulled away from everyone winning by a margin of 22.197 seconds to take the top spot on the day.

Canard earned the holeshot in moto two but fell and could not finish.

The podium featured Villopoto first (1-1), Dungey second (3-2), and Metcalfe in third (5-4). In fourth place was Davalos (10-3) and Kyle Cunningham had a good weekend to finish fifth (7-5).

Stewart remains perfect at Budds Creek

With Mike Alessi not racing this weekend because of injury, Stewart had an easier time jumping out to an early lead as he earned the holeshot in moto one.

Andrew Short and Michael Byrne engaged in an early battle for second. Short held off Byrne to control second early in the moto. Davi Millsaps, who is riding with a separated shoulder, had a respectable start in fourth. Josh Hill eventually made the pass on Millsaps and finished the moto in fourth. Millsaps fell back to finish the moto in sixth.

The always late charger Tim Ferry was at it again, as he moved up the field in moto one. He eventually moved up to Short and the two battled for second. Ferry was too much for Short as he made the pass to end the moto in second. Short finished the moto in third. Stewart finished far ahead of the field in first.

Ferry charged hard in both moto to finish 2-2

In moto two, Stewart jumped out and earned the holeshot once again.

Short moved quickly into second. Ferry had some trouble early, beginning the moto in 11th. Hill also had a difficult start, as he began the moto in 18th. He moved up the field to finish sixth. Millsaps looked to have another solid moto, moving into the top-five when he fell. This incident took Millsaps out of the race. As the moto continued, Ferry charged hard from his difficult start to move up and made the pass once again on Short. Ferry and Short kept the same positions they had in moto one as they finished in second and third. Stewart had no difficulty holding on to his early lead as he won moto two.
