The Final race of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile Supercross series wrapped up in the city that never sleeps…Las Vegas. This is the perfect place to celebrate the end of an awesome SX season!
Saturday, I began the day with the track walk. From the stands, the track looked pretty gnarly and it was. This Vegas track was longer than usual and the dirt was hard packed. Another twist was the very long holeshot. The start was outside the stadium, had a quick left turn, long run, another left and then right under the Progressive Direct sign. During the track walk, you could not help but notice Eric Kehoe sporting some very short, shorts! Eric had a bet going with Davi and the results of this bet meant Eric Kehoe walking the Vegas track wearing daisy dukes with the Honda team in tow. He was the talk of the track and I am sure the photos are flying all over the internet. Nice legs Kehoe! But please put those shorts away, far way!! Ha!
The Vegas pits were bigger and better than ever. The fans were abundant and the set up was a little different for the fact that so many fans expected to flood the pits and they did. The trailers and displays were more spread out with more room for sponsors rigs, and set ups. I ventured into the pits and spent some time at Speed talking with Rob Buydos.
I also had a great surprise. Nathan McQueen, a fan from Canada I met last year who made me a McGrath shirt, surprised me this year with two custom shirts, one for me and one for Davi. Nathan has an awesome talent of creating custom tees and is venturing into his own endeavor of a clothing line called Royal MX. He put a lot of thought into the detail of these tees and it was a great gift. Thank you so much!! I can’t wait to sport my tee this summer at nationals! I wish him the best of luck and success with his inspiration of his new clothing line. I also ran into another fan, Rachel. She was last week’s winner of the 4 SX Vegas tickets that I gave away in Seattle. She had the biggest smile on her face and thanked me for choosing her. She said that she was having the best time in Vegas and was ecstatic to be there. That was so cool!!
Race night, I hope everyone at home caught the race action somehow, whether on Speed, XM or the webcast. I was actually able to catch the replay of the live show on Speed today. It is great to see the coverage of Supercross on TV. The Lites Shoot Out was the big draw of the night. To see who was going to take the win and have bragging rights. Villopoto and Townley, the teammates and champs won both of their heats and showed that they had the speed to battle in the main. But in a twisted turn of events, both had unfortunate luck in the main and never finished the race. The guy who showed that he was a threat all season, Ryan Dungey from the east, took home the Vegas Shootout victory. The two that joined him on the podium, Weimer and Davalos, were pretty jazzed as well.
In the Supercross class Stewart ended in a high note with Reed behind in 2nd and Windham in 3rd earning his second podium in a row. The track had its share of casualties. A big scare in the main was when Davi went down in the whoops section. He hit them hard as the bike went flying over him, knocking himself out cold. He didn’t move for 2 minutes. The Asterisks team was there in a flash to assist. He finally rose to his feet with the help of Doc and the crew and they took him to the Asterisk trailer. Not much longer Langston went down in the same spot. He luckily was not injured. After the race I went to the Asterisk’s rig to check on Davi. He had banged himself up good and hadn’t remembered anything from the whoops to leaving the rig. Everything is fine now– just a bit on the woozy side. He said he felt like he was hit by a Mac truck.
Sunday night the SX Season was all wrapped up at the banquet. Once again it was a spectacular event hosted by Live Nation. It all took place in the new Planet Hollywood on the strip. Afterwards it all went down on the dance floor and everyone had a great time. I want to thank everyone again for a great year. I have completed two amazing years with Amp’d Mobile Supercross and have met even more wonderful people and fans along the way. I enjoyed every minute and can’t wait to see how the future of this sport is going to strengthen its momentum. Supercross is taking new strides and growing, I see it happening right in front of my eyes. We look forward to the future of SX and all the unpredictable surprises. I also want to congratulate Sara Lipert being crowned Miss Supercross 2008. Good luck and I wish you a great season next year.
As I am finishing up this race report that I tried to make short and sweet, I am starring at reality - the stack of books that I need to get studying at. I am finishing up my finals this week. Yahoo! Almost complete!
I am ready for the summer and plan to attend many of the outdoor Nationals. These riders have to turn around and gear up for more racing in the outdoors. Best of luck to everyone. Take care.
See you at the races!
