One of my favorite Supercross cities is Atlanta. Not only does it lend itself to great race action and one of the largest crowds, it’s a fun city to visit. Lots of sites to see!
Atlanta racing is what it was all about but I had an opportunity to check out the city of Atlanta. Coming in a day early, Davi and I explored the Georgia Aquarium which is the largest in the country. It was a blast and a sight to see in Atlanta.
Anticipated Supercross racing brought many crazed and energized fans filling the Georgia Dome to the rim, which holds 70,000 people. I was amazed at all the fans roaming the pits shoulder to shoulder and the dome was filled to the rim. It was the loudest bunch yet. During the pre-race show, I headed to the stands to find some lucky fans all riled up to win Supercross shirts and tickets – Yes I said tickets! I found a very wound up Stewart fan who was willing to do anything to win 4 Las Vegas Finals tickets. He was jumping up and down and yelling at the top of his lungs. When I handed him the tickets, I thought he was going to lose it. It was too fun! I handed out tons of swag and the official Supercross merchandise and felt I was going to get mobbed if I didn’t throw it out fast enough. The best was the little kids who were jumping to get a free t-shirt. They were adorable and I was shocked with how many little girls were coming up to me and wanted to talk to me about racing. It was great! It’s such an adrenaline rush to go into the stands and hangout with the fans. Plus, I absolutely love giving away SX swag!
Georgia is infamous for its red clay. And I went home with a lot of it. I was roosted on a few times and the dome was full of dust from the red clay. I was covered from head to toe. For the race, the track conditions were good, but the track seemed tacky and there were tons of deep ruts with many lines. It was tight and caused a lot of riders to go down and have some bar banging action. It made for good racing and that is exactly what we got. Carmichael was back at the track on his fair-well tour and that meant he was here to stir up the front of the pack. But the returning Millsaps gave a twist to the beginning of his heat by earning the holeshots and holding off the GOAT for a while. This heat had two starts because of a red flag. Carmichael was on top of his game challenging Reed and Stewart. In the end it was a familiar podium of Reed, Carmichael, and Stewart.
In the Lites, it was all new faces with a whole fresh line up of talented riders. It was a far guess on who would take the podium for the first East Lites race of the season. We came from the West Lites that was packed with flair, but had the dominating force Villopoto. Now for the East coast the line is jam-packed with many talented contenders. In practice, the top lap times were switching up constantly. We all knew that the race action would not disappoint and not be without some surprises. Lange and Dungey took the heat races. The main event was full of crashes and spills all over the track. But to start off the East Lites Dungey, Lange, and Goerke topped the podium 1-2-3. The East Lites playing field had been revealed and I think we are in for some real heated battles fort he East title. This is going to be good!
Coming in a day early and leaving a day later, I had the chance to take part in the DMSX Children’s AT Project Ride day at the track and I wasn’t able to ride but there were many enjoying it. It’s so awesome to see SX/MX industry working together for a very worthy cause. Carmichael, Ezra Lusk, Shea Bentley, Matt Walker, Zack Osborne, Tim Ferry, Davi Millsaps, and I were there to sign autographs and help support a great cause. It’s such an awesome display of community spirit to give back! I’m sure the ride day was a big success!
So next we are in the city of St Louis. I can’t wait. See you then.
See you at the races!
