Sunny So Cal lent us a perfect weekend for Anaheim SX race action! It was another weekend down as we made our last stop in Anaheim. It was an eventful day considering the wonderful weather we had, the outstanding practice times, and the amazing night show filled with surprises. It was such a fun weekend. I had a blast but I have to admit, I’m exhausted.
Once again it was a Kawasaki show with Villopoto in the Lites and Stewart in the Supercross class taking the wins. Stewart swept all three Anaheim races with victories. Reed held a strong 2 nd place riding on the tail of Stewart which caused some bar banging between the two during the race. And with out the presence of Carmichael at A3 who would bet he third person to fill the shoes on the podium with Stewart and Reed? None other than Stewart’s team mate Tim Ferry. It was his first time this season to land himself on the podium and he sits comfortably in 3 rd place in points. A3 was not only action packed racing but full of surprises; from the freestyle exhibition as part of the opening ceremony attraction to the excellent race action, if you left your seat for a moment, you may have missed something. We had a crowd full of die hard fans and a few superstars were in the mix too.
Before the show, I went up into the crowd to give away some merchandise and talk to the crazed fans. This totally revs up the fans and gets them excited because they get to see themselves on the jumbotron and they get a chance to win merchandise and free tickets to an up-coming supercross race. I had the big Las Vegas Finals tickets in my pocket to give away to some lucky fans. I found a young couple that were fanatics of Supercross and lit up when I handed them over 4 Vegas Supercross tickets. It was too much fun!
During the Pre-Night Show we got a spectacular freestyle show put on by the Red Bull Freestyle team. It was a great surprise to add to the build up of the races as these guys got the crowd on their feet pulling off crazy whips and even busted out a few back flips. It is not often that we get to see a freestyle expo in the middle of a supercross track and it added to the surprises that night that gave the fans a great show.
I also had the opportunity to introduce some of the stars who are fans of SX. Jason Bonham just happens to be the son of John Bonham the former drummer of Led Zeppelin. This was a real treat for me since Led Zeppelin is one of my favorite classic rock bands. Bonham has a real passion for the sport of MX and he is not only a fan but he rides. The Hayden brothers are not strangers of the Supercross scene as they have attended all of the Anaheim rounds this year. Jeff Ward was also catching all the racing at A3, a former Superstar of Supercross and a well recognized champion in Supermoto as well. Also, X games medalist in Snowboarding this year, Andreas Wiig stopped buy to check out the supercross racing and enjoy his night at A3. With all of these outstanding athletes and stars attending the races, it goes to show how the sport is growing and how all of these action sports collide. Not to mention, with RC’s venturing in to his new career as a race car driver, the SX fans are riding right along with him. As far as I know, this was the first year a NASCAR was brought out on to the SX track. NASCAR driver, Brian Vickers drove out in his #83 Red Bull Toyota Camry. He did a few donuts right in front of the start line. As I watched, it was pretty cool, but was anyone else thinking, yikes, he’s burning ruts in the start lines ha!! It was also the 3 rd time the new Red Bull Toyota NASCAR was revealed and the 1st time to be revealed on the west coast. What a treat for the supercross fans. NASCAR fans are becoming SX fans and SX fans are becoming NASCAR fans! It goes to show the growth of this sport and the relationship it has with others.
So as the night opened with an exciting opening ceremony with a freestyle expo, to the bar to bar race action, superstar fans, and NASCAR; Anaheim had it all! I wonder what’s next. We are headed to Texas this weekend to continue the west coast rounds. Everything is big in Texas, so wonder what we have in store for us?
See you at the races!
