Despite the cold weather outside the race action was hot! Plus it was awesome being in the new Ford stadium. Being a brand new venue, they brought over the actual dirt from the Pontiac stadium to build the track. That dirt has a ton of history in it! Both the Lites and Supercross class did not disappoint! Stewart took off with a great start and earned a good comfortable start. He maintained his flawless lead taking the win virtually unchallenged. But all eyes were on RC and Reed. We haven't seen a battle like this in a long time. It was Reed then RC, then RC and Reed. This battle was a crowd pleaser for sure. You have to hand it to Reed. He never gave up, even with an injured shoulder. After the race, Reed maintained a positive attitude with 3rd place. RC was out for the win, but as luck has it, his start was not what he had hoped for. RC had a lot of ground to make up. Behind the RC and Reed battle, there was more heat stirring up on the track between Wey and Byrne. These two were going at it and banging bars all the way off the track. If you listened to the live webcast you heard the altercation between these two guys on and off the track. It got heated. Also, during the LCQ Evan and DeHann were making dirty passes and ended up taking each other off the track during the race which left them out of a spot in the main. The podium was a wild place to be that night!
With only four rounds left in the 2006 Supercross season, the points have become tight. It's the three man battle of Carmichael, Reed, and Stewart. They are 1-2-3 and exactly 10 points separate each of them for the championship. The finals in Vegas may be one of the biggest battles yet and that makes it just that more exciting.
With talk about the points, that brings me to the East Lites class. The Lites class is proving to be incredibly challenging. Millsaps holds a strong lead in the points and is on his way to the championship, however Grant maintains to be a force to be reckoned with. In the Lites main event, the gate dropped and Teddy Maier took the Progressive Direct Holeshot. Grant had a reasonably good start and on the other side, Millsaps ended up with a bad start. But as always, he made up for it quickly. With the wave of the checkered flag, the win once again went Grant. Grant’s win also stopped Millsaps from taking the championship that night in
Detroit, but it was a smart move for Millsaps. Now he must wait until Houston to do so.
The KTM Juniors Supercross Challenge is celebrating its 10 year anniversary and I had the opportunity to announce the line up and commentate during this very cool race. I was very exciting and a bit nervous to announce during the night show in front of the crowd, but it was a great experience for me. Not only did I get to practice with the mic, it was a great opportunity to be a part of the KTM Junior Program. These kids and their parents get the royal Supercross treatment! It encourages and motives the kids. I mean how cool is it to be able to ride on a true Supercross track! I started riding at a young age and I can't imagine how spectacular it must be for a kid to experience a day in the life of a Supercross Star and to actually get to race on a real Supercross track. They even have their own autograph session in the pits. Next time you are at a Supercross, I encourage you to check out the KTM Junior pits and get your autographs from these future stars.
Well, I must wrap it up. I only have few days until I'm back on a plane to Houston. I'm asked many times how I endure all the travel. I've become quite accustomed to my schedule and love it, especially knowing that my destination is Supercross Race Action! It's super addicting. Don't you agree?
See you at the races!
