I’ve come full circle. A year ago, Phoenix was my first Supercross podium experience as Miss Phoenix. It was awesome to be back in my home state representing the sport I have such a passion for and the race action was very impressive to say the least. Plus, a highlight was that I reunited with some of my very best friends whom I grew up with in Lake Havasu. My weekend was non-stop from Friday night to Sunday afternoon.
I wanted to introduce my friends to a great Supercross weekend and we started off at dinner Friday night with some very fun and entertaining characters; Donny and Mike from FMF and Turbo Rief, who at the current moment is pedestrian status. We had a great night hanging out with the guys and the girls were ready for their full day Supercross experience on Saturday.
On race day the pits were jammed with fans. After meeting and greeting fans at the merchandise stand I was able to tour the pits with my friends. We also got to catch some of the practice, so they could get a look at what they were going to see in the night show. They all have claimed a favorite rider and had to get as close as they could to get a quick glimpse or picture. They were freaking out. They have caught the Supercross bug and stood star struck. Ha!! It was so cool to be able to share the Supercross with them. They have heard me over the years explain my love for the sport and now they got to experience it!
The track was tamed down a little more compared to last weekend at Anaheim. However, the split start shook things up. You never knew what side the riders were going to take. Okay, I have to say it! McGrath rocked! When he reached the podium, the much jazzed McGrath gave me a high-five and a hug. He was beaming with happiness. His holeshot, leading the first part of the race, and 4 th place finish made him feel like he practically won the race. The podium couldn’t have gotten any better. I was standing next to four of the most outstanding riders in the history of the sport: Carmichael, Reed, Stewart, and McGrath.
After the races my brother had the opportunity to come down by the podium where he was able to meet one of his favorite riders, Stewart. To his surprise he gave him his goggles. He was on top of the world! If a rider ever wanted to know what a fan actually does with the goggles they give them here it is; he put them on, rubbed them on his face, and carried them around, showing everyone. After much debate, he wore them during his WORCS race. He wanted the luck to be with him. The goggles are now displayed in his room never to be worn again next to his signed Laninovich jersey. Thank you Stewart!
On Sunday I drove out to Speed World MX Park to watch my brother, cousins, and friends from Havasu race the WORCS race. I also got to catch the beginning of the Pro race where Ryan Hughes dominated. In the afternoon I visited Arizona Cycle Park for the industry ride day where Ryan Clark hosted a fundraiser for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). I was very happy to lend a hand to help raise funds for this very worthy cause and it also created awareness for this heart braking syndrome. Despite the windy, cold weather many people attended the auction after a fun day of riding. The track out there is super cool. If you are in the area it is well worth checking out. Erv Braun conducted the ride day and auction which included some jerseys donated from Saturday night’s Supercross. There are more auction items still available and I encourage you to visit www.teamsolitaire.com to raise funds for SIDS. You may find and bid on your favorite riders jersey and help out.
See everyone this weekend at Anaheim 2. I am curious who is going to take the podium in the Lites Class, and who is going to take it all in the Supercross Main?
See you at the races!
