For the first time in a long time, the forecast for a Seattle supercross weekend was beautiful. I, for one, was really nervous about the weather, as I'm not the best mud rider. I just wanted a dry, normal race track to compete on. Luckily for me, God agreed with my wishes. It was about as nice as anyone could ask for during the day, and a little cool at night. The track, however, was a little tough. The dirt was rock infested, making for lots of roost and less than ideal traction. It was better than a quagmire though, so I decided not to look a gift horse in the mouth.
My first practice went as usual, not great speed but felt decent and figured out all of the obstacles. I knew I could be faster in a few spots and that the track would change a lot all day. I felt better in the second session but some untimely track maintenance helped out the unseeded sessions and bumped me pretty far back. I wasn't very happy with the AMA's decision to rework the track after the seeded practice but it was out of my hands. The end result was the loss of a few gate pick positions, but life goes on.
The heat races are chaos. With Lites guys, AX guys, and all of the SX regulars lined up, its an incredibly stacked field. I've seen past years' main events with less talent than the heat races of today. Good starts are crucial, along with 8 frenzied sprint laps. I snuck around the inside of the first turn and came out in 5th place. I tried to make no mistakes and only lost one spot to my close friend Timmy Ferry. I crossed the checkers in 6th, so relieved to be in the main event.
I started in between Windham and Andrew Short. Not exactly easy street. I knew that it would take a miracle to best both of them out of the gate so I was pondering back up plans. Sneaking around the inside again was my most likely scenario and that's what happened. Unfortunately, series points leader Chad Reed had the same idea and when he tipped over, I went with him. We remounted in 19th and 20th and I knew I had a lot of work to do. I couldn't believe how fast he was blowing past people on his charge forward. I, however, was stuck behind a pack of guys and couldn't seem to make anything happen. Until around lap 16, I was buried in 18th. I put a few moves together and got up to 14th at the finish... not great but I thankfully salvaged some points. It was a treacherous 20 laps, as the track had deteriorated badly. I was happy to have the 7 points and move on.
Vegas is the last race on the schedule. Its a good finale to a looong series. I love the city and the whole atmosphere of the Vegas race. Its not the best dirt on the schedule but it is what it is. The track always has a huge outside sweeper and the start is located outside the stadium. Its a welcome change and makes the racing different and the lap times longer. I am just looking for one more main event and 20 solid laps. It would be a great ending to a good year for me after a horrible 2007 campaign. I'm looking forward to it, as I'm sure everyone else is. There's nothing left to save, might as well leave it all on the track. Should be an interesting weekend with the SX title on the line and the Lites shootout. Hope to see you there!
