JT Talks - Dallas, 2008
Jason Thomas

Dallas always has the worst dirt of the year. Its always incredibly hard and blue grooved and too hard for the dozers to shape correctly. This year was no different. Rain Friday morning made for a rushed track and it showed. It was really unfinished and sub-par for Dirt Wurx. I think everyone felt the same way during track walk that it would be a slippery and really tricky race.

Practice was tough as the track was deteriorating quickly. It was either a deep rut or asphalt in the turns. Everyone was pushing hard to get a good lap time and mistakes were unavoidable. I saw so many guys crashing trying to push the envelope that it subconsciously made me a little conservative. I didn't feel too great in the first session but I watched the video and made some changes for the second time out and picked it up quite a bit. I qualified 15th which wasn't terrible but I knew I needed more when it came race time. My teammate Bryan was on fire, qualifying 8th, so I was pumped for him and at the same time trying to bug him for some speed!

My heat race was preferable out of the 2. With all of the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series guys now in Monster Energy® Supercross, the sx class is stacked! I knew I would have to be riding at 100% to make it. I got a bad start but after a lap or 2 my pit board said 9th and I knew I had no room for a mistake. I latched on to the group in front of me and pulled a little gap on 10th and just rode it to the checkers. I was relieved to be in the main event again and a chance at some points.

I was way on the outside on the start of the main. I needed an amazing jump off the line to get a good start and it just didn't happen. I was around 16 or so after a lap and was struggling to move forward. The track was really difficult to pass on and the slippery turns made it that much worse. I was stuck behind Dusty Klatt and Antonio Balbi for way too long and Nick Wey was creeping away in 13th. I finally got around those 2 and was trying to catch Nick and with a lap to go I was still pretty far back. I don't know if he thought I was one of the leaders or what but he pulled over with a couple turns to go and I slipped by. I felt bad because me and Nick are long time friends but I need the points and racing is racing. I'm sure he would have done the same thing if the situation were reversed.

Next week is Detroit and Ford Field. I had a good race the last 2 years there and I really need to keep it going. Its going to be a dogfight to the end I think and every point counts. 4 races to go... I need to finish strong!
