Anaheim 2 is round 5 of the series. Nerves have started to settle and the season is starting to take shape. Its also the toughest part of the season for me, as I have always struggled in the west coast rounds. The slippery dirt of the first 5 or 6 rounds just doesn't fit with my riding style. For me, its all about getting through these as well as I can and getting back east asap.
Practice was decent for me, I felt much better in the 2nd practice after making some bike adjustments. I got most of the track figured out and practiced a few starts before the long afternoon break.
My heat race lineup was pretty stacked. I knew I needed to get a great start and ride an amazing 8 laps to qualify. Unfortunately, I didn't ride my best heat ever. I just wasn't feeling it, going backwards lap after lap. I knew I rode poorly, but wasn't sure why. Going into the LCQ, I knew I needed to pick up the pace immensely. I got a 3rd place start in the LCQ and made a pass into 2nd right away. I tried to stick with Michael Byrne for as long as I could to gap the field behind us. He got away but not before I put a few seconds on the battle raging in 3rd. I made it to the finish in 2nd, good enough to qualify. I really need to make it out of my heat because these last chance races are too stressful!
My main event was pretty boring. I got a terrible start and just never did anything exceptional. I felt good on the bike but my pace was just off. I could see the guys in front of me inching away and I felt helpless to change it. I changed some lines and jump combinations but nothing was working. I just hovered in 16th and that's where I finished.
It was a frustrating main event but it always could be worse. I just tried to look at the bright side of things and continue to focus on the looong season ahead. Hopefully I can figure out how to ride this slippery dirt one day, it sure would help. All I can do is keep working at it and capitalize on opportunities when they knock. Thanks for reading and talk to you after San Fran!
