Farber Asks - What do some of the riders think of the recent fuel controversy? - 2.6.07
Mike Farber

QUESTION:

For the last couple of years the AMA has been testing teams for illegal fuel. Last week, after a random test, the AMA found three riders whose fuel came back over the legal limits and there have been a few discrepancies in the fuel testing. Let’s see, what some of their opinions are about the fuel."

“We saw the fuel testing bring drama into last year’s SX series, and it’s a shame it’s happening again. I think VP Racing Fuels should become the main distributor for race fuel for all of the riders, so everyone is on an even playing field and this will not be an issue ever again.”

“I think it’s very disappointing for everyone involved. We had the fuel tested at the beginning of the year and everything was in compliance with the new rules. It was tested at Anaheim 2 and it came back with some discrepancies that the two labs are saying. But we’re trying to get to the bottom of this so we can fix this situation so we don’t end up in another crisis.”

“I think the penalty was way overboard and I don’t think anyone took time in making their decision. I think they should have worked with the teams a little more so we could fix this situation. Everyone is blaming VP Fuels for being quiet and not speaking out but I think the AMA should have done the same thing. They should have taken a few weeks and made sure they had all of their facts straight before letting the whole world know.”

“Well, everything is not final yet. The guys from the AMA, VP Fuels, Yamaha, and our guys here are working on some more samples. We had fuel delivered to us and it was suppose to be legal. They’re supposed to make a decision some time next week so hopefully we get our points back.”

“I believe it’s just the way the AMA tests their fuel. When the teams have there fuel tested and then the AMA does their tests they come up with two different results. Then VP Fuels looks at the tests and they can’t believe the results of the tests. I believe it’s something the AMA is doing with their testing.”

“Man, I would like to say that I’m pumped and those guys deserve it but I’m that guy. It wasn’t our intentions at all to gain anything through performance. Our bikes are plenty fast. We thought we had some gas that was in compliance and we still think it’s in compliance with the rules. By our tests, the fuel is good but with the AMA it isn’t, so we really don’t know.”

I think it’s a bummer for the riders because it’s out of their hands. They lost their purse money and points. No one is out here cheating intentionally but there is some gray area with the tests. I just think we need a spec fuel for everybody to use and that would make it fair for everyone.”

“I heard some rumors that they are waiting on some more confirmed tests from the labs but until they do some more testing then my opinion is up in the air.”
