QUESTION:

“We’re a little over the halfway point of this exciting supercross season. Recently, Ricky Carmichael got his 25 points back from the fuel crisis and has taken wins at Atlanta and Indy. He has tightened up the points chase with Chad Reed and has 17 points over James Stewart. I thought this would be a good time to ask our industry folks the infamous question. Who do you think will win the 2006 Amp’d Mobile AMA SX series?"

COMMENTARY:

“Carmichael ! He has a JOB to do and I believe he does his homework better than anyone else, right now.”

“I think that Ricky is going to win the championship. After everything that went down at Daytona, with Chad Reed's shoulder injury and then Bubba crashing, it really looks like RC is in control. Chad has never really beaten Ricky when he had to either, and Bubba hasn't figured out how to constantly stay on two wheels, so I'm going with RC."

“ Week 10? already? The first 6 weeks of the season were so good as far as racing goes, Ricky and James exchanging wins, incredibly close racing at the front, which everybody has been begging for. Then the drama started, big crashes, DNF's, illegal fuel penalties, the whole feel of the series changed. Chad who was by no means out of the hunt but was definitely in need of some luck got just that; his nemesis gave away 25 points and was then penalized 25 points in effect putting Chad in the driver's seat for the rest of the year. When the penalty was reversed and Chad placed 3rd in Indy, he lost 30 points in a day. That has to be disheartening.

From here on out we will see what everybody is made of. There are only 3 guys with a shot at doing it. We know Ricky is not going to crack under pressure. The guy is a championship machine. James is by no means out of it at 17 points back and I fully expect him to win some races in these last 7 rounds. Chad is the one with the pressure right now. It is basically a 7 race series between Ricky and himself. He gained a whole bunch of momentum after his St. Louis win and Ricky's point’s deduction, but has since lost that momentum with Ricky's Atlanta and Indy wins and getting his points back. If Chad can look at this as a brand new season today and put everything that has happened up until now behind him he has a chance at winning this championship, but if he can't and dwells on the big cushion he had it's over. Bottom line is my money would be on Ricky, I would like to see James or Chad (or both) make this a nail biter down to the end but I think Ricky is going to do what he has to do to make the championship his, we all know he has what it takes.”

“Boy, that’s a good question. On the surface, it looks like Ricky is the one to beat.

James is a rocket-ship. However Ricky has been able to keep it on two wheels.

With a fairly large point spread between those two right now, I’d give the edge to Ricky. Chad is still the points leader, but I believe that Ricky and James have a bit of an edge right now.

Unless Ricky gets a fifth in a main, James has his work cut out for him. I can tell you this; we are definitely set up for the best second half of a Supercross season since MC vs. Emig in 1997. It’s been 9 years of Domination since 1997. You had MC from 98 thru 2000, RC from 2001 thru 2003, then again in 2005. Chad Reed was dominant in 2004. I’m just pumped that we’ve got battles going on. Great racing means more fans, more drama, and more internet chatter. I love the season thus far. Has there ever been this much drama?”

“I want Carmichael to win the series because he works very hard and isn't afraid to put it on the line when the time calls.  He rides with so much heart and determination and I really like to see that in a rider.  He was a bigger kid and that transformed himself into a champion by listening to the O'show and made his dream come true.”

“I have to go along with what I said after the Canadian rounds and say Ricky. James is struggling with making good racing decisions in his first year full year in the big class, and Chad is getting faster, but still seems unwilling to hang it all out, which both Ricky and James have the ability to do.”

Ted Campbell - Privateer Andy Bell - Ogio

“We're over the halfway point of the season, and after Daytona is when RC always wants to be in the driver's seat. And guess what, he is. As we've seen in the past, Chad Reed always comes on strong in the second half of the season, but nursing a separated shoulder will surely slow him down. Barring no catastrophes, Carmichael will cruise home for his fifth AMA Supercross Championship.”
