A Week As A Wife In Supercross - Anaheim3
Kristen Oehlhof

I now know what it is like to officially run around with my head cut off! This week was sooo chaotic for us, let me start from the beginning…

Joe and Gerald decided that Joe needed to be on his bicycle more, so they have been road biking like crazy this past week. They continued to test on Tuesday and Wednesday at Competitive Edge, however they opted to take off Thursday due to a nagging injury Joe sustained in San Francisco after his get off in the heat race.

Joe landed on his right elbow, which of course has always been his problem elbow due to a bone chip from high school basketball. His right elbow has been twice the size of his left elbow now for a week, with no shrinking of the swelling in sight due to his training regimen.

We had friends from both Indiana and Washington fly out for the weekend to enjoy the warmer weather we are having here and to of course watch the races. I snagged the girls up and headed down to Corona for the 4th Annual WMXF Luncheon on Friday. We had a great time with just us gals and got to help raise more than $2,000 for a wonderful cause!

We arrived at the track on Saturday morning just before the rider’s meeting and track walk. I took that time to go around again and have some more guys autograph the helmet that is going to be auctioned off. It looks pretty darn good if I may say so myself. I also went around looking for gear and plastic that could be auctioned off for the RISK Program that is in place with the Fire/Police MX Team. They are trying to raise money for under privileged kids and need to get more interest to those that can help fund the organization.

I finished up my rounds and made my way to the track to watch Joe’s practices. He had a good first practice that put him in the top 3 of his practice. His second practice didn’t start off so hot…he crashed pretty hard in a rhythm section and ended up knocking the wind out of him. Needless to say, that crash is catching up with him today.

He started out his heat race with a great start, but was bumped off the track at the first turn. He got going at the end of the pack only to have another rider’s bike smack him and his bike down to the ground. Joe got up with a tweaked front end and smashed in radiator. The AMA opted to throw the red flag out to stop the race due to the rider’s condition on the track. The rider ended up being okay and Joe got to restart his race again. He came out this time in about 11th and stayed there till he stalled the bike and ended up 12th in the heat.

Joe went to the LCQ hoping to get redemption on the track. He ended up getting caught up in the second turn with a group of riders and winded up 12th in the LCQ. Unfortunately, when you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time, it seems like nothing is going to happen right for you.

Like I have said before, Joe keeps getting back up and I couldn’t be more proud of him for that. He has more heart and dedication to this dream of his than most will ever experience in a lifetime. I just hope that I am there to see that monkey get off his back…he deserves the break and it is coming – I can feel it!
